Children’s book author, poet and speaker
Welcome to my website! I write children’s picture books. Here’s where you’ll find news about my books, where to buy them, and where I might be signing or making an appearance. Things like that. With the help of my publisher I hope to eventually post a page with puzzles or coloring pages.
GRIZZELDA GORILLA is my most recent book.
When a freak accident with a skateboard damages the beautiful parasol her father gave her, Grizzelda must find a way to fix it.
I’m very proud to announce that GRIZZELDA GORILLA recently won an EPPIE award for Best Children’s/Young Adult ebook.
You can buy GRIZZELDA GORILLA at directly from the publisher at http://www.kittycatbooks.com as well as Amazon.com in paperback, hard cover and ebook.
A recent review for GRIZZELDA GORILLA had this to say: “Excellent language and story line for kids that are always finding they don’t want to follow through with tasks they don’t like, then often find that sense of satisfaction when they actually put forth the effort. Illustrations are delightfully connected to the words!” – Melody Logan 08/2008 FIVE STARS
DRAGON TALK was my first children’s book.
Nervous about her first day of kindergarten, Kristin gets comfort from her favorite stuffed toy dragon, Drakon.
DRAGON TALK is also available directly from the publisher at http://www.kittycatbooks.com as well as from Amazon.com in paperback, hard cover and ebook.
Lighthouse Literary Reviews had this to say about DRAGON TALK: “For five-year-old Kristin, things like rumbling thunder can be scary – but being brave is a whole lot easier with her friend Drakon, the magical stuffed dragon, by her side. Starting school can be a bit frightening, too, so Drakon come along to smooth Kristin’s way. Dragon Talk. K.D. Huxman’s charming story, whimsically illustrated by Teresa Farrington, will go a long way toward easing the first-day jitters of the five-year-old in your life and is a lovely lesson in getting by with a little help from your friends.” Reviewed by Judi
SCHOOL VISITS
I used to work as a school librarian so I love to talk to children about writing and reading books. If you’d like to talk to me about visiting your school, library, or parent/teacher group please contact me a k.d.huxman@att.net. A quick 30 minute read and Q&A session is free at this time. These sessions are fun for me and the students. A separate page with details about school visits is in the works.
May 21, 2008 – Today I was the mystery reader for Mrs. Zilverberg’s 4th grade class. Click on the “Pictures” link to the right to see the picture.

March 28, 2009 – The Pikes Peak Library District’s 3rd Annual Mountain of Authors
I had a great time at this annual event. Can’t wait until next year!
On April 12, 2008, I moderated the Children’s/YA panel at the Pikes Peak Library District’s second annual Mountain of Authors Event. I shared the stage with three awesome children’s book authors: Mary Peace Finley http://www.marypeacefinley.com/, Katherine Pebley O’Neal http://www.katherinepebleyoneal.com/, and Donita K. Paul http://www.donitakpaul.com/. In addition I had the chance to meet and talk to many people who are interested in writing books for children as well as those who are simply lovers of books.
